Philosophy of Education: Social
Studies
As an educator, I hope to share my high ideals and standards of education with my students. My goal is to help
students learn more and lead more productive lives. I must demonstrate to them that social studies should be valued. It fosters
the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values that they need in order to participate in the civic life of
their local communities, the nation, and the world.
The major goal of social studies should be to help students attain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values needed
to become reflective decision-makers and citizens. Developing decision-making skills should be a major goal of the social
studies curriculum. As a teacher, I hope to incorporate higher-level concepts and interdisciplinary units into my curriculum.
I want my students to explore all facets of society and use their critical-thinking skills to analyze decisions from the past
and present; and incorporate these skills into future situations.
Exposing students to social studies is more than reading textbooks. It is enabling them to explore the past, the economic
history, ethics, and social relationships in the classroom. I hope to integrate todays technology into the classroom. Through
the use of the Internet, multi-media tools, interactive skits and role-playing, I hope to captivate my students and bring
history alive to all in my classroom.
